A future conference school? by Joe Streator

When I first heard Butler mentioned as a potential member of our future conference, I wondered why.  Seemed to me their good basketball tradition was relatively recent and while it may be sound like a choice I was not certain if they represent a good long term fit.

I finally found some time to google this fine outstanding university.  Thought you may find the information below interesting if, like me, you have been too busy with more important things.  I was hoping Crean could go undefeated until IU played us in the tournament, but have to say what an impressive feat for Butler to beat UNC and IU already in the year.  Can any other team come close to that?  "The 7" hope to keep the Big East name.  Hope that works and that the tournament remains in MSG.

"Butler University was founded by members of the Disciples of Christ church, though it was never controlled by the church. The university charter called for "a non-sectarian institution free from the taint of slavery, offering instruction in every branch of liberal and professional education. The university was the first in Indiana and the third in the U.S. to admit both men and women. Butler was the first university in the United States to endow a chair designated specifically for a woman, the Demia Butler Chair (endowed in 1869). Catharine Merrill, the first person to hold the chair, became the second woman named to be a professor in an American university.'  (Thanks to wikipedia for the above information.)
