The night was disappointing even before the game started with Gardner being out. We all know the bubble has to burst but we just don't want it to end with another injury...and we don't want it to end with a close loss after being down early by 18 and we don't want it to end........
Have to say it was encouraging that we did not fall off the face of the earth early but it certainly was not a good half considering we were playing a badly slumping Seton Hall. I caught myself thinking at half time that since we are only down by 4 we will win. But we had 12 TOs to their 10 and Gardner cannot be blamed for that. We were fortunate our 1-8 3 point shooting was only marginally worse than the Hall's 2-7. I don't think we can hold ND to that level on Saturday. When Juan Anderson got in early I was hoping he was going to be the guy to step up but that was not to be the case.
Vander Blue and Crowder were the stars of the game. Blue shot 7-10 with only taking 2 3s which is good. He cannot force things. When you add to that 5 offensive rebounds (8 total) you get a nice game even when considering 1-4 from the line and 3 TOs. DJO scored a few points but his 4-12 shooting is unacceptable. Maybe he was pressing too hard with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James sitting under the bucket.
What is the outlook? I think we beat ND. Gardner's scoring and passing will be missed, if he is indeed slowed down or out, but we can beat them in a tough grind it out game....otherwise called winning ugly.
Michigan St lost last night and I think we also pass Georgetown in the polls with a win over ND...so look for at least a 13 ranking next week at this time.
This is starting to get real exciting!! With a win Saturday you have to start thinking we can win em all the rest of the year.

Marquette's bench looks to deliver more consecutive defensive stops. Buzz calls 3 stops in a row a ‘turkey’, that’s old-school bowling slang. You know, three Xs in a row. My Dad would love that but it kind of confuses me when I hear Buzz talking turkey.
ReplyDeleteHere’s another thing. Seton Hall went to the line a grand total of 6 times and only made 4 free throws as a team. Marquette made 20 out of 28 free throw attempts. That sure didn’t hurt.
Joe's star picks are right on. I thought Blue was the man last night. He was the guy that revved our engine in the stretch. He kicked up play action when we needed it. Crowder's double-double was great; I love him! They both really delivered a super game!
Now let's beat the domers!
Remember, Austin Carr will not be coming through those doors!
ReplyDeleteFast Willie is going to south bend, Indiana to see Marquette and Rudy ruiteger , if anyone wants to join me , please contact me, go Marquette!
