Carrier Classic 2012
Even though the game wasn't played Marquette has this photo to remember their day on a battleship.

11/18/11

Marquette 95 Winthrop 73 from Al Kelly

I didn't know the broadcast was pay per view until game time when I went to watch the game. I spent the $4.99 and watched anyway. It was a really cheap broadcast with the audio feed coming from Homer and McIlvaine on the radio broadcast. No replays or any other bells and whistles. Video feed was OK but the camera work was all over the place. You didn't know the score unless Homer or Mac mentioned it or they showed the scoreboard during a time out. They did include a live stats page if you like that kind of stuff. The broadcast was not worth the price.

The gym reminded me more of my high school games than the Arena or the Bradley Center. The seating area looked like rows of bleacher that fold up after the game. The half time show was a marching band which the crowd of 2848 for the most part ignored.

As for the game it was obvious very early MU was the more talented team. Winthrop only had one scorer to try to keep them in the game, guard Andre Jones who finished with 29 pts. No one else had more than 10. They spent most of the game throwing the ball around about 25-30 ft from the basket and eventually shooting a long 3 pt shot.

Vander Blue seems to have regained his confidence on offense. He led all scorers for MU with 26 points. Blue made his first 7 shots and 7-10 at the free throw line. He even hit his only two 3pt attempts and was more decisive driving to the basket.  Its good not to be a freshmen anymore. Reminds me of Butch Lee-out of sync freshmen year but definite improvement the next year. It still remains to be seen if he keeps his confidence when Marquette starts their Big East schedule.

MU now advances to the semifinals to face Ole Miss at 7:30PM CST Sunday nite.  Mississippi defeated Drake 63-59. TCU and Norfolk State are in the other semi. The final will be at 7:30PM CST Monday. The broadcast should be free this time as its scheduled to be on the Fox Sports Network (FS Wisconsin in Milwaukee).
