Mayo Coming Back? Not So Fast
by Michael Hunt of the Journal-Sentinel 12-12-12
Sophomore guard Todd Mayo, who was declared academically ineligible before the season began, posted Wednesday on his Facebook account that he is on his way back to rejoining the team:
"Did great on my finals, one more to go which is an easy one for me. so it's looking like the 17th of the month I will be back yezzir, Might get an early Christmas Gift. Thanks everyone for their support."
But while Mayo thinks he did great, it will be up to the professors to decide. Grades are not posted until next week, so Marquette doesn't know yet if Mayo will be eligible for next term.
"Exactly," coach Buzz Williams texted me.
Mayo has had a sketchy career with the Golden Eagles. After playing well off the bench his freshman season during non-conference play, Mayo basically disappeared against the Big East. Because his attitude wasn't right, Williams sent him home for the second summer session to give Mayo a chance to think about whether he wanted to be at Marquette or not.
He returned saying he was prepared to be a team player and listen to Williams, but did not get a chance to test his so-called new resolve when he wasn't keeping up academically.
If Mayo returns, he could help the Golden Eagles as a reserve. But he probably won't get many more chances to prove he could fit in a team-first system.
